SALT LAKE CITY – As part of the 2009-2010 Bastian Foundation Diversity Lecture Series, Westminster College is pleased to host a lecture by Patrice Gaines on Nov. 10, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. in the Vieve Gore Concert Hall in the Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory.
Co-Founder of the Brown Angel Center, a nonprofit organization focused on supporting at-risk women and girls as they become financially independent, Gaines has used some of her own life experiences, including overcoming drug addiction and time in prison, to mentor and support others. An award-winning journalist and former Washington Post reporter, Gaines has written her autobiography, Laughing in the Dark: From Colored Girl to Woman of Color –A Journey From Prison to Power and Moments of Grace: Meeting the Challenge to Change.
This Bastian Diversity Lecture Series features speakers who have worked to make a difference by creating a new organization or center, developing and implementing strategies for change, and/or being a community activist. Their work reveals how they personally addressed the question, “what can I do?” Through their presentations, they will show us, implicitly or explicitly, what they have done, alone or in collaboration with others, to make a difference.
A book signing will follow her presentation. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit http://www.westminstercollege.edu/culturalevents
